15 Disney Princesses’ Outfits, Ranked From Least To Most Practical

Aurora's two dresses weren't necessarily impractical, but once again we have a case of a young lady frolicking through the woods WITHOUT SHOES. Running around without shoes in the woods in the 14th century seems like a great way to get an infected cut and die because there's no medication. It's a good thing she was asleep for so much of the movie, because her feet needed a break from the abuse.

Merida wore shoes! Blessings. She also wore a dress to ride a horse and rock climb in the Scottish wilderness, and she had a terrible habit of slinging her bow over her shoulder and into her loose hair. Merida's hair is gorgeous and glorious, but that bow would have gotten stuck every single time she did that. Merida was already so rebellious against the social norms of her time, why not go all the way and wear some pants? Or a kilt? Anything other than a floor-length dress.

Cinderella actually had one dress for chores and another dress for the ball, and I respect that. Her outfits were generally pretty practical for her purposes (she even had a nightgown!), with one huge exception. Glass heels, are you serious?? Those shoes would get hella slippery after a night of dancing, no wonder one fell off her foot. Not to mention the foggy foot sweat that would be visible because glass is clear. AND ALSO, Cinderella must have had the gait of a mouse because otherwise she'd break those shoes and end up with shards of glass in her feet after taking one step. I'm sorry for that visual.

Snow White also had one dress for her chores and a nicer one for flower picking, good for her! But why was her flower picking dress a full gown, and why was she wearing heels? Sure, she couldn't have known that she'd end up running for her life through the forest when she got dressed that day. But if you're getting ready to go pick flowers in the sunny hills, you don't wear pumps!

Giselle, like Snow White, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time wearing the wrong dress. She was getting married, how was she supposed to know that her stepmother-in-law was going to push her down a well and she'd end up in New York City? But the fact remains that Giselle wore a ginormous gown to run through the city, and continued to wear it while cleaning Robert's apartment with the New York City vermin. I hate to say it because it's beautiful, but I hope she burned it.

Ariel is a mermaid, which means that the iconic green tail we see isn't an outfit, it's just part of her body. You know what isn't part of her body? A seashell bra! I know, I know, she couldn't wear a sports bra because it would be anachronistic or be naked because of the PG rating. But I'm here to judge practicality, and the truth is that a seashell string bikini wouldn't stay on in the ocean and the hard shells would cut up your chest. Her human outfits were fine, and she gets bonus points for fashioning a sheet into a dress on the fly, but minus points for having perfectly coifed hair after spending 16 years in the ocean.

Jasmine! Wore! Pants! You might expect to find her at the top of the list for that reason, but alas, not quite. Along with her pants, Jasmine wore a tiny little crop top that looks like it would have caused some serious wardrobe malfunctions on that magic carpet ride. Also, those earrings?? Someone check on her earlobes because those things lookheavy.

Pocahontas didn't wear shoes, but she spent a lot of time canoeing and diving off of cliffs, so we can give her the benefit of the doubt there. Maybe she didn't wear shoes because she was worried they'd fall off. Her clothes were certainly easy to move in, but would they have kept her warm when it got cold? InPocahontas II: Journey to a New Worldwe saw her wearing boots and long sleeves in the Virginia winter, so points for that.

Like Pocahontas, Moana didn't wear shoes but she spent so much time in the water that they weren't necessary. Her outfit was comfortable and weather appropriate, and wasn't diametrically opposed to what she was doing. That makes it, you guessed it, practical as hell.

Elsa's "Let It Go" dress is beautiful and iconic and all of that, but how helpful would that slinky gown be in an ice castle? Do we know if Elsa could even get cold? She said the cold never bothered her anyway, but I always thought that was a metaphor. Other than that, her outfits were perfectly reasonable for ice magic. Elsa's high placement is also due to her pants outfit from the sequel.

There isn't much to say about Anna. Her outfits are slightly more practical than Elsa's only because she doesn't wear a gown in an ice castle and gets pants in the sequel as well. What really gives Anna the edge is the fact that she doesn't have an intense smokey eye like Elsa. Her perfect eyeshadow is very pretty, but that takes a long time!

Belle wore sensible shoes, wore a cloak when it was cold, and *gasp* changed clothes a few times throughout her movie. The dresses she wore before the iconic yellow ballgown weren't too ostentatious and seemed comfy enough for inventing, reading, and hanging out with sentient flatware. Yay!

Tiana is a frog for a lot of her movie, and as such she wears no clothes. This is very smart and practical because frogs do not need clothes. As a human, she wears dresses, but she's doing things where dresses are perfectly reasonable attire. And they're all cute outfits (yes that includes her waitress look)! No complaints, 10 stars for Tiana.

The best way to judge practicality is by asking two questions: 1) What is this person doing? and 2) What are they wearing (or not wearing) to do it? If these answers are in harmony with one another, you've achieved practicality. What was Mulan doing? Fighting a war. What did she wear? Full body armor, duh. Was she able to dress practically because she was pretending to be a man? IDK, you tell me. She wore a dress during her climactic fight with Shan Yu, but that's because she needed a disguise to sneak into the palace. That's practical in its own way. Mulan is the clear winner, all hail the queen.
